From a safe location outside, call 911, then your gas utility. Stay away until emergency personnel say it is safe to return. Do not wait for a fireplace appointment. Wood-burning and gas fireplace systems can develop different problems, including draft concerns, damper issues, firebox or refractory damage, ignition problems, and venting concerns. These are different parts of a traditional masonry fireplace. Factory-built and gas appliances can have different construction and venting requirements, so the repair must match the actual system.
Damaged firebrick or mortar joints need evaluation before repair. A factory-built unit may use model-specific refractory panels instead. Confirm the construction and compatible materials before approving the work.
The smoke chamber is above the throat damper and leads into the flue. Some masonry chambers can be repaired or resurfaced, often called parging, depending on condition and access. Smoke entering the room alone does not identify the chamber as the cause.
The flue carries combustion products up the chimney. Cracked liner tiles, open joints, or an appliance change can require closer evaluation. Firebox repair or smoke-chamber work does not automatically address a damaged liner.
